ETHNIC MINORITY ACHIEVEMENT TEAM

Department news:: Families and children to our annual cultural swap celebration event...read on

Hampstead School Ethnic Minority Achievement Team Works to ensure that EAL pupils gain full access to the curriculum and achieve to the best of their ability. The team helps to maximise learning across the full range of subjects at the same time as developing students’ confidence and competence in English.

The EMA team works alongside mainstream teachers in the classroom, supporting large groups of EAL pupils as well as individuals.

Newly arrived EAL students who have been in the UK for less than a year and are new to the English language, attend the Induction Programme classes, every week, for two hours. This is a 12 week rolling programme which introduces EAL beginners to the English curriculum. The students learn key skills and key vocabulary in many subjects, they are exposed to a variety of teaching and learning activities, and are able to draw their prior learning experience into a learning frame. This new arrivals programme features on a National Strategies DVD ( “ New Arrivals Excellence Programme” ) and is used as training material across the country.

Every year the EMA team organises events to celebrate refugee week in London. One of the events, is the International Evening of music, dance, drama and poetry recital, attended by over 300 people last year.
The team has established strong links with the local community. Parents and carers are actively involved in the event and provide food from all over the world.

The team organises annual meetings for Somali, Pakistani and Bangladeshi parents who work closely with the school to support their children’s learning at home.

The team consists of 4 members of staff; 3 teachers and a classroom assistant who is also a Home-school Link Co-ordinator.

50.2% of students at Hampstead are EAL learners. There are 72 different languages spoken by students who come from 95 different countries.
