Department overview
The school has a well-established Special Needs Department (Curriculum Support) which the governors are committed to supporting, maintaining and improving.
We recognise the National Curriculum Inclusion Statement, which emphasises the importance of providing effective learning opportunities for all students, with key principles for inclusion:
• Setting suitable learning challenges.
• Responding to students’ diverse needs.
• Overcoming potential barriers to learning and assessment
for individuals and groups of students.
• Social inclusion for students, including those with
physical difficulties, of diverse ethnic and social backgrounds
and economic status.
The Department consists of Teachers and Teaching Assistants.
The Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator (SENCO), supported by the deputy, is responsible for the day to day operation of the school's SEN Policy. The SENCO and all staff in the Department share responsibility for Special Needs throughout the school at all levels, working with students identified by the code of practice as having Special Educational Needs.
The Curriculum Support department is line-managed by the Head. There is also a Special Needs governor who links with the Curriculum Support Department.
The DESCO (Designated Coordinator) leads a team of special support assistants and meets formally with them and the SENCO fortnightly. Educational and pastoral matters should be dealt with through the normal channels i.e. Tutor, Subject teacher, Head of Department, Head of Year etc. as deemed to be appropriate.
