Subject overview
We hold regular concerts in school and in the local community for the many varied school ensembles. Hampstead students have performed at the Royal Albert Hall, Royal Festival Hall and St. George’s Bloomsbury. Ensembles meet regularly after school to prepare for performances.
There are opportunities for all students to join Senior or Junior Orchestras, Jazz Band, Guitar Orchestra, Recorder Ensemble, Junior Choir, Chamber Choir and many more.

All students have music lessons at Key Stage 3. Throughout year 7 – 9 students follow a varied curriculum which introduces them to key musical concepts, forms and traditions. In Year 7 students follow courses in Graphic Score, African Traditions, Scales, Musical Pictures and Samba. In Year 8 students study The Blues, Sequencing, Minimalism, Indian Influences. In Year 9 students look at Reggae, Film Music, History of Popular Music and Arranging.

We offer Music at GCSE level. Students have the opportunity to follow either an instrumental or technology based course. We follow the Edexcel syllabus which gives students the opportunity to study a range of different musical styles, genres and traditions including: Britpop, Minimalism, Music from Africa, Classical forms and much more. |
We offer Music A level following the AQA Music course which involves study of both the Western Classical tradition and Popular British Music from the 1950s to the present day. The course has options for performers and aspiring composers as well as the historical study of music. |
