Year 7
Welcome to Hampstead School
Coming into Year 7 is a big step and there are always anxieties as well as excitement. At Hampstead School we take this transition very seriously and all work together to ensure the changes are as smooth and happy as possible.
One key way that the school will work to help your child adjust is to break the school down into smaller, more manageable chunks. The size of secondary school can be overwhelming, so we address this in a number of ways: tutor groups provide your child with a member of staff who will be their first point of contact each day. The tutor will also be the member of staff who parents are encouraged to speak to. Second, all our Year 7 tutor rooms are in the same part of the school, the English Block – it’s the large Victorian building visible from Westbere Road with our space-age Sixth-Form Centre on top. Also housed here is the Year 7 Room, a large classroom/dining area that is a base for all Year 7s to use before registration at 8.40 each morning, during breaktime 11.00 -11.20 and for lunch at 13.20. Food is sold here at break and lunchtime. This is also where the Year 7 office is located, where students can meet their Head of Year. The Head of Year works with the tutors, teachers and associate staff to coordinate the ‘team around the child’.
The aim of the Year 7 Team is to provide a safe, enjoyable, academic environment where students can learn the academic, social and personal lessons that our school provides. We strive to get to know each student: their talents, hopes, successes and concerns. In partnership with parents and carers, we work to foster a sense of responsibility and respect in our students to empower them with the skills and confidence they need to succeed in Year 7 and beyond; to make good, supportive friendships, and conduct themselves with respect, both for themselves and others.
