Hampstead School Newsletter

Hello everyone,

We have had a fantastic start to the year at school!

Year 7 have settled in extremely well and staff have been commenting on what a wonderful group of students they are.

The number in the Sixth Form has settled at over 300 in total. This makes us one of the largest Sixth Form providers in the area, something that is often now known. I think this is due to our commitment to providing the best curriculum and support for our students that we possibly can. While offering a very broad range of A Levels, we also offer a range of vocational courses and a range of pathways. We try and cater for the broadest range of students possible. We are, after all, here to serve the community.

If you know any families who may benefit from Hampstead’s approach, please do share our forthcoming events with them:

Hampstead School Open Mornings

Those unable to visit during the designated open mornings are welcome to contact us directly and request an alternative day.

I look forward to seeing you in school soon,

- Rob Hague, Deputy Head

The PTA at Hampstead School has been quiet for a while. We would love to see it brought back with new energy and purpose.  Reviving the PTA means giving parents a stronger voice, building closer connections between families and teachers, and creating more opportunities for students to thrive. With a fresh start and enthusiastic involvement, the PTA can become a powerful force for positive change—supporting school events, addressing community needs, and making a real difference in the lives of our children. Parents/Carers interested in making this happen, please contact Sophie Rodger s.rodger@hamspteadschool.org.uk or Karen Smith k.smith@hampsteadschool.org.uk

Free School Meal Update

Camden Council have still not provided us with an updated list of those eligible for Free School Meals. If you are affected by this, please contact the school office.

Good attendance tips for parents/carers and students

September is the start of the school year and we thought we would put together a few tips to make things easier for parents/carers and students. They mainly involve setting up routines to help everyone and encourage good attendance and punctuality.

Top Tips:

  1. Students must arrive at school on time.
  2. The first ten minutes of school are really important so make sure your child arrives in plenty of time so they are at line up by 8.35am.
  3. Make sure your child has a copy of their timetable in their school bag. If they lose it, they can copy out a version from EduLink at home or on the school computers, or ask their Form Tutor for a new one as soon as possible.
  4. Have a dedicated place where they put their school bag and make sure books and equipment are always stored in the bag. This saves time in the morning before school.
  5. Please ensure your child has correct uniform. They should take it off when they come home and put it out ready for the next morning.  Bags should be packed the night before school and remember to set the alarm clock.
  6. Good routines are important before they go to bed and when they get up in the morning.
  7. Make sure you leave plenty of time to get to school.  Aim to be there 10 minutes early to give you a little leeway.  Maybe think about black out curtains which is helpful in the summer months.
  8. Homework should be completed as soon as it is received to avoid a last minute panic.
  9. Letters from school arrive home at various stages make sure you ask your child if they have any and remind them to give them to you as soon as they get it.
  10. Speak to your child about their day, check for any worries and report them to school.
  11. Encourage them to join clubs and activities, many happen during lunch times and after school and are a great way of meeting new people.
  12. Have a calendar or wipe clean board to set reminders of key events especially after school activities and clubs.
  13. Don’t book holidays in term time as you could be fined.
  14. Try and arrange medical appointments after school or during school holidays.
  15. If you do go for an appointment, they can still come into school later or leave a little early with school permission.
  16. Read the attendance policy and know how to contact the school if you child is absent.  When children are off let the school know how long you think they will be off for if it’s a longer-term medical issue.
  17. If you have a concern about your child at school contact the Pastoral Team using your child’s year group e.g. 7@hampsteadschool.org.uk
  18. Did you know if you child has 90% attendance this is the same as missing half a day of school every week of the school year.  Or four whole weeks of school a year. Or half a year taken across the primary school years or a whole year of school if you include primary and secondary – THATS A LOT OF SCHOOL MISSED.  Think how this would impact your child’s learning.
  19. 17 school days missed can result in a drop of a GCSE grade.  The higher your attendance the better chance your child has of getting higher grades. Attendance is very strongly linked to attainment.

If your child is too ill to attend school, you must use https://studybugs.com/ to report their absence.

Thank you.

An update on water leaks in the West Hampstead area

Westbere Road

This leak has been fully repaired and we are expecting the reinstatement to be completed on the 26th September allowing the C11 to resume its full service. We are working with Thames Water operational teams to ensure works are expedited.

West End Lane-Cannon Hill

There has been two leaks at this location, the first burst was repaired on Tuesday. The second burst occurred as a result of services being transferred to the 16 inch main to ensure no loss of supply whilst the first main was under repair. The second burst has now been repaired but we have a large area of consequential damage in the Carriageway as a result of the bursts.  Works are anticipated to be completed by Monday, as it is large area to reinstate.

Extensive repairs to the carriageway will need to be carried out  and it is unlikely to be reopened until early October .

Arkwright Road

Repair was completed last night.  The main now has to be tested and chlorinated to ensure water supplies are safe. Surveys of ground conditions are also being undertaken.  The works are anticipated to be completed on 29th September with the road then fully reopened.

We are pressing Thames Water to complete these works as soon as possible. Thames Water operatives will be working extended hours to ensure that the works are completed as soon as possible

We are working with Thames Water and their partners to ensure works are expedited as a result of these discussions.  Thames Water will be working longer shifts to expedite this.
