Hampstead School Newsletter

A heartfelt welcome back to Hampstead School for all our students, staff and families following last week's Half-term holidays.

Winter ends this week, on the last day of February, and spring begins on the first day of March.

This part of the year features diverse religious and cultural events, very much in-keeping with our ethos as a school with community roots and global connections.

Ramadan began last week and a significant proportion of our school will be observing the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, celebrated by Muslims as a period of fasting, prayer and reflection. Lent also started during the Half-term holidays, with the six weeks leading up to Easter signifying a time of repentance and spiritual renewal for Christians.

The Hindu festival of Holi starts next week, celebrating spring, love, and new life, as does the festival of Purim, known as the Jewish carnival of happiness.

You may have already noticed the days are beginning to get longer, and the clocks will go forward and ring in British Summer Time at the end of March. In 2026, that means we’ll get brighter evenings a day earlier than we did last year.

As you can see, there’s lots to look forward to at this time of year and we hope this sense of positivity can be maintained throughout the remainder of the academic year. We are now half-way through 2025-26 and can’t wait to work together to achieve as much as possible in the time that remains.

Notice from PE Department

Dear Parents and Carers,

I am writing to inform you that all CORE PE lessons for Hampstead School students will continue as normal throughout the Ramadan period.

Students are expected to attend lessons in their full PE kit and take part in all planned activities. We fully recognise that some students will be fasting during this time, and our PE staff will make appropriate considerations to support them. This will include providing adequate rest periods and offering differentiated activities that are lower in intensity where necessary.

However, it is important to emphasise that Ramadan is not an exemption from participation in PE lessons. While allowances will be made for students who are fasting, all students are still required to engage in physical activity as part of their curriculum.

Physical Education plays a vital role in students’ health, wellbeing, and personal development, and maintaining routine during this period is important for their continued progress.

We appreciate your support in reinforcing these expectations with your child. Should you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact the PE department.

I would like to wish you and your family a Ramadan Mubarak.

Yours sincerely,

Christopher Squires

Head of Physical Education

Hampstead School x Haberdashers’ Boys’ School

Hampstead School was originally founded as Haberdashers’ Boys’ School in 1903, before relocating to Elstree in 1961. Shortly before half term, we were delighted to welcome back more than 20 HABS Old Boys, now in their eighties, for a special visit.

Students from Years 7–13 enjoyed participating in this oral history project, listening to vivid recollections of school life. After a rainy tour of the site, and fortified by refreshments, former pupils shared memories of walking across open fields to school, breaking ice on the swimming pool before jumping in, climbing into the tower room to hoist the school flag, recalling hair-raising disciplinary methods and sheltering under tables during Cold War drills.

The visit proved a happy and enriching experience for all involved. Plans are already underway for a return visit, and we look forward with great enthusiasm to hearing many more stories from the HABS Old Boys.

Ballet Shoes Trip Year 11

GCSE Year 11 Drama students recently attended a performance of Ballet Shoes at the National Theatre. This visit will directly support their Component 3 (C3) Maker’s Examination, Section B, in which students are required to evaluate a live theatre performance.

Ballet Shoes tells the story of three adopted sisters pursuing their dreams in the world of dance and performance, exploring themes of ambition, resilience, and identity. The production provided rich material for students to analyse, particularly in relation to production style, staging, design, and overall production values.

The behaviour of the Year 11 students throughout the trip was exemplary, and they represented the school extremely well. The experience created many valuable opportunities for reflective writing and practical application of their theatre studies.

Ali Jabhouri expressed his gratitude to Mr Carpenter for taking him, stating that it was “the best thing I’ve ever seen.”

Donmar Warehouse Trip Year 10

On 27 January, GCSE Year 10 students went to see When We Were Married at the Donmar Warehouse. The play was a farcical comedy.

The story follows three couples, highly respected pillars of the Yorkshire community, who gather to celebrate their joint silver wedding anniversaries. What begins with champagne toasts and self-satisfaction is quickly disrupted by an unexpected and deeply embarrassing revelation. As scandal turns to farce, the couples are forced to confront long-buried truths, simmering resentments, and the liberating possibility of starting over.

Year 10 particularly enjoyed the strong characterisation and precise comic timing. Lily commented, “It was really funny, and I especially enjoyed the moment when the character broke the fourth wall.”

GCSE Drama students are working with the Donmar Local project and will visit the theatre four times a year, as well as welcoming industry professionals into school to deliver workshops.
