Art

At Hampstead School we celebrate the creativity of our students’ work; their imaginative and enthusiastic responses enable them to produce original and diverse outcomes.

We work closely with a range of artists and galleries to allow students first hand experience of how practising artists work. We have strong links with Camden Arts Centre, Serpentine Gallery and Kingsgate Workshop Trust.

We aim to: Help children to understand and use the language of aesthetics and to comprehend the nature and function of art design within the context of their own work, their environment and culture.

Improve the quality of children’s learning, their abilities to make informed decisions, solve problems, develop their ideas and the ability to act upon them to make personal responses.

Develop the necessary skills used in the manipulation of appropriate materials and techniques.

Students are taught in tutor groups in years 7 & 8 and smaller split groups in year 9. Over the 3 years students develop skills across a range of 2D and 3D disciplines including drawing, painting, collage, wire modelling and ceramics. Students also develop and understanding of how other artists work.

Students study GCSE (Edexcel) Art & Design over years 10 and 11. Edexcel have introduced new exam specifications which come into practice in 2011.

Students complete 2 projects of coursework which counts for 60% of their overall grade and an exam project which counts for 40%.

We offer AS & A2 Art and AS & A2 Photography in years 12 and 13. Students produce 2 projects each year in response to a theme.

A2 students get the opportunity to exhibit their work in a public gallery for their final exhibition.
