Careers Education & Inspiration in Key Stage 5

At KS5, our curriculum continues to link to the CDI Framework for careers and is constructed around its three main areas of career and work-related learning:

  •  Self-development through careers and work-related education
  •  Finding out about careers and the world of work
  • Developing skills for career wellbeing and employability

These objectives are met through a combination of dedicated lessons, collapsed timetable Enrichment Days, our whole school focussed Enterprise and Careers Weeks, volunteering opportunities within the school, careers software packages and direct contact with professionals.

In addition, all students undertaking a vocational qualification are provided with placements in a relevant setting that forms an integral part of their course. Students who are not following a vocational course are strongly encouraged to organise a variety of work placements during their vacation time.

Any student in Key Stage 5 may request an appointment with Lindsay Evans our Independent Matrix Qualified Careers Advisor.

Every student is expected to complete an online portfolio of all the activities they complete that evidence their increasing employability.

1. Self-Awareness

Can you assess how you are changing? Are you able to match your skills, interests and values to requirements of and opportunities in learning and work?

2. Self Determination

Can you create positive accounts of your own story? Can you emphasise the responsibility you are taking to manage your own progress, raise your achievement and improve your wellbeing?

3. Self-improvement as a learner

Are you proactive in taking part in career and work related learning activities? Can you assess the benefits of these activities to you as a learner?

Finding out about careers and the world of work

4. Exploring careers and career development

Can you explain the impact of changing career processes and structures on people's experience and management of their own career development?

5. Investigating work and working life

Can you recognise the personal, social and economic value of different kinds of work? Are you critically aware of the key debates about the future of work?

6. Understanding business and industry

Can you explain how what business do, the way they operate and how they measure success is changing?

7. Investigating jobs and labour market information (LMI)

Can you research and evaluate relevant labour market information (LMI) to draw conclusions to support your future plans?

8. Valuing equality, diversity and inclusion

Can you reflect critically on the ethical, legal and business case for equality, diversity and inclusion in the workplace and the implications of your behaviour and that of others.

9. Learning about safe working practices and environments

Can you recognise different levels of risk and do you understand your responsibilities and rights as a students, trainee or employee for observing safe working practices?

Developing skills for career management and employability

10. Making the most of careers information advice and guidance

Have you developed and made the most of your personal network of support? Can you show that you are a proactive and discerning user of impartial careers information, advice and guidance?

11. Preparing for employability

Can you explain what you are doing to improve your employability and to meet the expectations of employers and co-workers?

12. Showing initiative and enterprise

Have you developed and applied enterprising qualities and skills in your approach to learning, work and career planning?

13. Developing personal financial capability

Have you developed your financial capability to improve the decisions you make that affect your everyday living, further study, training and work.

14. Identifying choices and opportunities

Have you researched and evaluated progression pathways and return on investment for the higher and further education, training, apprenticeship, employment and volunteering options that are open to you?

Do you know how to make career enhancing plans and decisions?

To deliver our aims we continue to develop a curriculum that embeds careers education information advice and guidance (CEIAG) whilst enriching students' lives with opportunities that reach beyond the classroom and into the wider global community.
